The windstorm from Hurricane Ike left Louisville with a mess to clean up, and
some citizens still have debris waiting to be picked up from months ago.
Following the windstorm, Metro United Way assembled teams of "Wind Warrior" volunteers to clear the yards of over 600 elderly, ill, and disabled individuals. But after the debris went to the curb, the homeowners were responsibile for having the debris removed. This became a physical and financial problem for the homeowners until two organizations stepped in to do the job. Darren Betz, a spokesperson for Reisert, one of the organizations, says, "The United Way issued a request for 600 volunteers throughout the city." He says they "did a wonderful job."
